Statement on the Shooting in Tumbler Ridge

Dignity Seniors Society BC is shocked and deeply saddened by the tragic shooting in Tumbler Ridge. Our hearts go out to the victims, their families, first responders, and all those affected.

In times of heartbreak, communities need compassion, accurate information, and space to mourn. Their grief must not be exploited to spread misinformation, stigma, or hate—particularly against already vulnerable populations.

As an organization dedicated to supporting trans seniors and elders across British Columbia, we are deeply troubled by the anti-trans rhetoric circulating on social media and in statements from some community leaders attempting to blame or vilify transgender people following this tragedy. Such rhetoric is not only irresponsible—it is dangerous. Scapegoating an entire marginalized community after a complex act of violence fuels fear and puts vulnerable people—our 2SLGBTQIA+ communities—at even greater risk.

Many trans seniors already face isolation, discrimination, and barriers to care. Inflammatory rhetoric deepens these harms and increases anxiety and isolation.

Moments of crisis demand leadership grounded in facts, empathy, and care—not division or fear-mongering.

Dignity Seniors Society BC stands with our trans seniors, elders, caregivers, and all allies who believe in safety, dignity, and evidence-based, affirming support for all people. We reject any language that pathologizes identity or frames affirming care as harmful. Such narratives undermine public safety and the wellbeing of our communities.

If you or someone you know is feeling unsafe, overwhelmed, or impacted by this tragedy or the surrounding rhetoric, support is available by calling 1-877-330-6366 or 988.

Our focus remains on healing the community of Tumbler Ridge as they navigate this unthinkable tragedy.
