DSS accepted request from researchers and has strict criteria (link criteria here) for which ones we support. We know many of our community members are tired of ‘being studied’ and often tell us they participate in research but don’t see any changes. We share your frustration and it is why we exist. However, we believe research is important to:

·       Give voice and visibility to 2SLGBTQI+ Seniors.

·       Highlight the unique experiences and needs of 2SLGBTQI+ Seniors.

·       Develop best practices to serve the needs of 2SLGBTQI+ Seniors.

·       Create statistical data that helps governments and other fairly distribute resources.

We hope you will trust the research we offer on this page and can participate to advance our cause. If you would like to join our research email list please click here (link). We will send you research projects that we have assessed as relevant and trustworthy. Your participation will always be your choice and purely voluntary.

Join our partners at ARRC BC in their advocacy efforts to reform long-term care in BC:

Seniors Week is a time to recognize and celebrate seniors in BC but we also need to recognize the continued plight of our most vulnerable seniors living in long- term care LTC) homes. The need for reform of the LTC system remains urgent as resident quality of life continues to be compromised by staffing issues, the lack of continuity of care and little meaningful activity. You can change this.

ARRC has partnered with the BC Association of Social Workers on a campaign to improve quality of life for residents in long-term care (LTC) through comprehensive system reform.

Phase 1

It takes one minute to by joining our online letter-writing campaign demanding that the BC government strike a multi-sectoral advisory forum to develop and guide implementation of an action plan for system change, informed by those who live, visit, and work in facilities. We have made multiple requests to Minister Dix and had many discussions with Parliamentary Secretaries about forming an advisory forum, without success, even though the 2023 Budget Committee recommended funding it.

Please share the link below with your family, friends and networks and let Health Minister Adrian Dix, the Assistant Deputy Minister of Health for Seniors and the Parliamentary Secretary for Seniors Services and LTC, and your MLA, know you support reform.

Thank you for your commitment to improving quality of life for residents in LTC and for your ongoing support of ARRC.  There will be more actions taken on this campaign and we will keep you informed.

Research Study: Aging with Affirmation

Aging with Affirmation is a study to examine the social service experiences and needs of older transgender and gender-diverse adults in Canada

This work is led by or close colleague and trans researcher, Hannah Kia, who is an Assistant Professor at the University of British Columbia’s School of Social Work, in partnership with Egale Canada.

In this project, we aim to hear from older trans and gender-diverse older adults, as well as community-based advocates and activists, policymakers and service providers located in Canada.
