Beyond the Binary: Improving cancer research
for Trans* & Gender Diverse people

University of Manitoba Ph.D. student Morgan Stirling seeks participants
for a 1-2 hour focus group. All participants will receive an honorarium.

  • Led by Dr. Tara Horrill, B.N., Ph.D.

  • Motivation. As older trans and gender diverse people are often underrepresented in research and also have the greatest cancer risk, I am particularly interested in engaging this group in these conversations.

  • Eligibility. In order to participate, individuals must:

    • Identify as trans and/or gender diverse

    • Be 18 or older

    • Have some type of cancer experience (as a cancer patient, caregiver, or someone who has participated/eligible to participate in cancer screening)

    • Have access to the internet, as focus groups will occur online.

  • Commitment / compensation. It is expected the focus groups will last 1-2 hours and participants will receive a $150 honorarium.

  • Nothing about us, without us.

    • The Beyond the Binary cancer research project is seniors-focused, led by a non-binary person.

    • “Three members of my PhD committee are part of the 2SLGBTQIA+ community. …

    • ”The study is using a community-based mixed methods design. As part of this, we (mostly me) are working with a community advisory board of trans* and gender diverse people who are collaborating on many parts of this project, including data collection tools, recruitment, and disseminating study findings.

    • ”Currently most of the individuals I have recruited are under the age of 60. I am hoping that we will recruit enough participants so we can generate findings related specifically to older adults. …

    • ”There is limited research related to older trans and gender diverse adults, especially in cancer research …”

  • While there is no closing date, Morgan hopes to complete his data collection by the end of October, 2025
